ITAA / EXCHANGE REFERENCE
Keep the author in the frame
A practical editorial checklist for attribution and permissions before an artistic exchange.
Identify each contribution
A drawing, a tattoo, a photograph and the text describing them can have different creators. State what you made and name collaborators accurately. A social media credit alone does not establish permission to reproduce or repurpose an image.
Separate reference from result
Name the visual reference and explain how it relates to the work. Do not present another artist’s study as your own or infer a technical process from a finished photograph. A useful critique keeps the original context available.
Ask about the proposed use
Explain the intended audience, channel, duration and whether the work would be edited, translated or promoted. Obtain permission through the responsible rights holders and ask how they want to be credited. This is editorial planning guidance, not a determination of ownership.
Keep permission alongside the material
Keep the source, credit wording and agreed scope together. If the intended use changes, return to the responsible person for confirmation. Ask the operator how concerns or withdrawal requests are handled before sharing material for publication.
